As temperatures rise, the fly season begins. What starts with just a few flies can quickly turn into a persistent problem in the barn.
cNot only do flies cause irritation to animals and staff, but they can also spread disease and have a negative impact on production outcomes. A well-planned and timely approach is therefore essential. Indufarm employs a four-stage approach, in which prevention and targeted control go hand in hand.
It all starts with hygiene
Effective fly control starts with prevention.
Please note the following points:
- Remove manure residues promptly
- Avoid spilling food
- Check for leaking water pipes and drinking taps
- Keep cesspits under control (these are real breeding grounds)
It is also crucial to start early. Identify where the flies breed (manure heaps, manure pits, bedding) and where they gather (window sills, stable doors, rafters, etc.).
The earlier you take action, the smaller the population will remain.
4 stages of an effective fly control strategy
Phase 1: Control of larvae
The basic rule is simple:
No maggots = no pupae = no flies.
Larvae control prevents the next generation from developing. Products that interfere with the larva’s moulting mechanism ensure that it does not survive the moult.
Advantages of this approach:
- Safe to use
- No development of resistance
- Structural impact on the population
Phase 2: Treatment of vertical surfaces
Adult flies mainly rest on vertical surfaces such as walls, doors and beams. There are two methods for treating vertical surfaces:
A. Spreading out, e.g. with Sojet or Alphi
- Treat approximately 5% of the floor area
- Flies often consume an excessive amount, which reduces the likelihood of resistance
B. Spraying, e.g. with Bugster, Deltasect or Permas 250 EC Combi
- Treat approximately 25% of the wall area
- Apply only to clean, non-porous surfaces
- Higher risk of resistance than spreading
C. Room treatment – rapid correction
In the event of a sudden outbreak, a room treatment using aerosols such as Mouch'Clac, Flyspray, Nebulous Turbo, and Pyretrex Fogger provide a quick solution:
- Rapid knock-down effect
- No resistance to natural pyrethroids has been reported
Please note: this is a corrective measure, not a substitute for a structural approach.
Phase 3: Treatment of horizontal surfaces
The pellets on small plates or cardboard are sugar-based and contain a pheromone and an insecticide, such as, for example, Sheila.
Please note:
• Do not spread too thickly
• Change regularly
This method attracts flies and targets them specifically.
Phase 4: Treating animals
In the case of cattle and sheep, it may be necessary to treat the animals themselves, such ast Gerapyx.
Application:
• Between the shoulders or along the back
• The active ingredient penetrates the upper layer of the skin
Protection:
• Lasts for 2 to 3 months
• 2 to 3 applications per season
Here’s how to protect your pets from flies and other parasites.
Cattle and sheep
you can treat against flies
on their back or between the shoulders
Prevent resistance
Active ingredients belong to various chemical groups, such as pyrethrins, pyrethroids, carbamates, organophosphates and neonicotinoids. A well-planned rotation and correct application are crucial to prevent resistance.
Fysical pest control
If chemical control is not possible, or is not permitted, you can always put up physical barriers against flying insects, such as:
- electric fly killers, e.g. Ecogril
- adhesive sheets,
- and adhesive-based fly traps, e.g. Fly Tape Kit, Muscaroll, or FlyCatcher
Practicalities for successfull fly control:
- Start early,
- combine hygiene, physical and chemical control,
- work in stages,
- prevent resistance,
- and tailor your approach to your specific circumstances. Because every barn is different.
