Dextrose (= grape sugar C6H12O6) is a sugar that is absorbed very quickly by animals. It is a fine white, odourless and sweet powder.

It is a quick source of energy.
It has a positive effect on the sow's fertility, the number of piglets born alive and the birth weight of the piglets.

Sugars stimulate the pancreas to produce insulin. The increased sugar and consequently insulin levels cause more IGF (Insulin-like Growth Factor) to be produced. This stimulates the production of FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) and LH (luteinising hormone).

FSH: Follicle-stimulating hormone, a hormone that promotes egg maturation, ovulation and the formation of oestrogen hormones in sows. In boars, this hormone influences sperm maturation.

LH: is a hormone produced in the pituitary gland. In sows, it stimulates the ovaries to form a follicle in which an egg matures. In boars, it promotes the production of the male hormone testosterone in the testicles.
